IN State Standards vs. Subject Guides
As a high school teacher, most textbooks I’ve used through student teaching and into the first three years of my career have been driven by state and national standards. Many of the standards are vague for world languages and hardly ever go to the “understanding” lever and rarely go to a transferable level. IB has eight subject areas in the MYP that help students experience a “holistic and well-rounded education”. The curriculums of each subject are developed with the “whole picture” idea and are not focused solely on the content of the specific subject. This balanced approach uses content to process the information.
As some schools have done with ACTFL standards and state standards, schools have made reference charts that show the alignment of the IB curriculum and state standards to ensure that students are meeting both IB Objectives and state standards.
